What is Sound Therapy?

Sound therapy is the use of sound, music, or vibrations to improve physical, emotional, and mental well-being. This can involve instruments like crystal singing bowls, gongs, drums, chimes, or even the human voice. The goal is to help the body and mind enter a state of relaxation and balance.

How does Sound Therapy Work?

Our bodies respond to the sounds through hearing and physical vibrations through the body. The vibrations are conducted through the ears, our skin, bones and cells, that help carry the sound even further through the body including through the spine. As our bodies are made of 70-80% water the sound vibrations are easily carried through our bodies.

The sound frequencies help to relax the body bringing it into the parasympathetic state (rest and digest state) where the body can rest deeply allowing it to heal at a deeper level. In our busy modern lives most people are in an almost constant state of fight or flight (sympathetic nervous system state) here our bodies can’t rest and rejuvenate and we see an increase in mental and physical imbalances.

That is why it is critical to find ways to relax the nervous system. Sound Therapy also has the capacity to send our brainwave state into Alpha and Theta. Alpha is a relaxed wakeful state such as when daydreaming or meditating whereas Theta is a near-unconscious state, such as when in a very deep meditation or drifting in or out of sleep (which people sometimes do in sessions!)

Helping the brain to enter into these relaxed brainwave states is another way to give the body it’s time to rest and relax and also promotes the body's self-healing capacity.
